What is power cycling and why is it useful?

Power Cycling

  • Power cycling is the process of powering down and back up all of your Internet hardware. This could just be your modem and PC, but could also include other pieces of equipment hooked up in between these two, e.g. a router or MTA for VOIP (broadband phone) service.

  • To power cycle properly, you need to unplug the power to each piece of hardware and shut down the PC(s). In order, going from the modem to the PC, you power up each piece of hardware, wait at least a full minute, then move on to the next piece, e.g. power up the modem, wait a minute, power up the router (if you have one), wait a minute, then turn the PC back on.

  • Power cycling is useful when you have lost your connection to the Internet, are having a problem sending or receiving email thru a email program, or experiencing slow speeds. A great deal of the time, power cycling will resolve the issue. If you try this and still have having problems, please contact your Internet technical support.
